What Does Home Siding Really Do?

Everyone knows that your roof is an essential part of your home, but siding is more overlooked. From aesthetic to functional benefits, there are many reasons why your siding is so important. As your siding experts, we’ve compiled some answers to the question, “What does home siding really do?”

1. Boost your home’s appearance
Siding can dramatically change the appearance of your home at first glance. With many different types of siding, you choose your style and the most appropriate material for your environment.

Here are a few types of sidings and what they offer:

Cedar Shingle – combining rustic beauty and durability. Due to its many cuts, textures, patterns, and styles, cedar is one of the more customizable options for your home siding.

Clapboard Siding – often referred to as wood siding, weather board siding, or wood plank siding, this option is a classic. Cedar is our most popular wood used in clapboard siding mainly due to its resistance to high winds and other extreme weather conditions.

Vertical Siding – this design alternative to traditional clapboard siding is installed perpendicular to the ground. It provides both natural beauty and rich color.

2. Repel Insects
When you choose cedar siding, it naturally produces an oil that acts as an insect repellent, turning away wood-eating bugs, such as termites.

3. Keep rot at bay
Another benefit to cedar siding is that its natural oil also resists wood rot. This makes it a perfect option for homes that experience high levels of humidity and damp, rainy conditions.

Looking to install new siding? Our siding installers at Landmark Exteriors are here to help you with the installation process, no matter which type of siding you choose. Our experienced and well-trained installation professionals are experts at installing and are ready to help! Your Fall 2016 Maintenance Checklist

Fall has officially  arrived, and with the last few days of warmth it’s time to tackle those last minute chores that can help prevent our homes from damage this winter.

Step 1: Store your tools and furniture
From lawn mowers to lawn chairs, it’s time to stow away whatever it was we were using daily during summer. When snow falls, the last thing you want is for your mower to get buried and your chairs to get blown away – let’s put them away until next spring!

Step 2: Inspect the chimney
Before you turn on the fireplace this fall, there are a few things you’ll need to check. First, look up the chimney or blockages – did birds bring nesting materials down with them? Did critters climb down? If these materials catch  fire, it could crack the chimney and cause a hazard. Lastly, don’t forget to check the Chimney damper, which  allows you to close the flue when the fireplace is not in use to prevent heated or cooled air from escaping the home. If any of your chimney parts need repair or replacing, take care of them down before frigid nights arrive!

Step 3: Seal windows and doors
Got air leaks? Seal the cracks around windows and doors to ensure you don’t waste heat this winter and that your home remains a comfortable temperature.

Step 4: Check for roof leaks
One of the last things you want in winter is a leaky roof, so let’s resolve the problem before it’s too late! A few ways to determine if you have a leak is to look for missing or damaged shingles, or water stains on the ceiling or walls. As your roofing contractor to address the situation immediately and secure your roof once more.

Step 5: Clean the gutters
This fall, your gutters should be clean and debris free! The downspouts should also be directed away from your house to prevent flooding. If you need a new gutter system, turn to your roofing contractor for proper installation.

Gutter systems installed by Landmark Exteriors are created with copper, painted steel, aluminum or other materials to complement the architectural design of your property. We will work to ensure that the gutter system allows for proper drainage while remaining architecturally appealing. Landmark Exteriors will determine the proper pitching and the correct number of downspouts for your property. Meanwhile, our Landmark Exteriors Home Care division can help to maintain your gutters with regular cleanings.

Metal Roofs Fairfield County | Greenwich | Darien

Texture
Metal roofing can be molded into many shapes and are installed as interlocking panels with hidden fasteners. If you look from a distance, they can almost perfectly mock the appearance of shingles and tiles.

Myths
Metal roofs has its share of misconceptions including:

  • It’s more likely to be struck by lightning. While metal does conduct electricity, it’s not necessarily drawn to it.
  • Metal roofs are noisy in the rain. Not true. In fact, they could be quieter than other types of roofs
  • Metal roofs can be damaged by hail. Extremely large pieces of hail will damage any roof, but normal hail will not.
  • Metal roofs make your house cooler in winter. Metal roofs actually have no effect on the temperature of your attic. It’s the insulation under the attic floor that keeps you warm.

Benefits
The primary benefit of metal roofs is its longevity. Meaning, most manufacturers offer 50 year warranties and sometimes lifetime. Metal can in fact last two to four times longer than other roofs such as asphalt. They are also lightweight and fire-resistant.

At Landmark Exteriors, we offer only the top-quality copper and metal roofing materials to provide our customers with durable, weather-resistant, guaranteed roofing solutions. 3 Ways You’re Harming Your Roof

Roofs are like people – they require attention and care. If you neglect your roof, it could crumble. In turn, it won’t be able to perform its main function: protection. So do both you and your home a favor by avoiding these three mistakes.

Ways You're Harming Your Roof | Roofing Companies Greenwich1. Not scheduling maintenance
Roofs are made to last years – some up to 50 years or more. But that doesn’t mean they don’t require care. You should inspect your roof seasonally or hire your roofing contractor to do it for you. This means, they will look for manage and make any necessary repairs if needed. The best times to schedule maintenance are during the fall and spring, when you are taking care of other work in and around the house.

2. Missing the warning signs
From curling shingles to granules in the gutters, there are many warning signs that could tell you your roof is in need of TLC. If could be as obvious as noticing missing shingles from the sidewalk or finding them on your front lawn. Don’t ignore the signs. One imperfection can lead to another and so forth. Take action as soon as you notice something is wrong.

3. Ignoring a leak
Leaks are one of the more obvious signs that something could be wrong with your roof. For example, finding water spots on your ceiling can help you pinpoint where the problem might be. If it’s just a few drips, it could be hard to find, but if the leak is consistent and shows damage, do you and your roof a favor by not waiting another moment.

At Landmark Exteriors, we understand how important it is to maintain your roof. No matter how big or small the damage, our professionals are here for your every repair and re-installation. To speak with on one of our professional staff members, give us a call at 203.838.3838.

3 Simple Ways to Choose Roofing Color

Black, grey, white, beige? There’s a whole array of roofing colors out there, so how can you possibly settle on one? Choosing a roofing color for your home can seem like a stressful task, but here are three simple solutions you might have overlooked.

Roofing Companies Fairfield County | Cedar Roof Greenwich

Consider the climate
Considering the climate you live in holds an impact on deciding which roofing color to choose. Darker colors absorb more heat, so if you live in a cooler climate, keep in mind that darker colors can keep your home warmer. On the other hand, bright colored shingles can reflect heat and keep your interior much cooler in the hot weather.

Choose complementary Vs. contrasting
The color of your house also plays a role in determining which color roofing shingles to choose. But first, you must know the difference between complementary and contrasting colors. complementary shingles would be any shingle with a shade that’s similar to your house. Contrasting colors exemplifies choosing black shingles to match a white paint job. Remember: choose complementary colors if you want to gently blend your roof into the color of your house, and choose contrasting colors if you prefer to accentuate your roof.

Know the benefits
Every type of roofing material has its perks. For example, asphalt shingles retain heat and come in many different shades. Clay shingles typically repel heat. Wood (or cedar) shingles are long-lasting and easy to repair. Metal shingles are eco-friendly and are long-lasting.

No matter which roofing material you choose, Landmark Exteriors is happy to help you with your next roofing installation project! To speak with on one of our professional staff members, give us a call at 203.838.3838.
